Originally the Shamrock Hotel. Was known as the City Hotel during the early 1970s. Bob Crawford converted the Hotel to the City Tavern and introduced the Christchurch brewed beer Lion Brown to Timaru

Bob and Helene Crawford were owner operators of the City Hotel from 1970 - 1974. After converting the hotel to a tavern they then moved to Christchurch and then in 1977 moved to Australia. Bob passed away in Brisbane from cancer in 1998. Helene continues to reside in Brisbane. Their 3 children have settled in southeast queensland and have all married.
