If you are thinking of doing a road trip in Wellington, check out this youtube video. It pretty much highlights some of the things you can do there if you rent a cheap car.
I also found another good site to check out Wellington accommodation and Wellington hotels at, if you're headed that way. Wellington is - well, to me at least - easily the cultural capital of NZ, so there's plenty to keep you occupied here. And the wine buffs NEED to take a trip to the vineyards; Wairarapa and Marlborough, are within a short drive and provide some world class wine! Another thing you need to make sure you get to do is visit New Zealand's national museum Te Papa Tongarewa.
