Cornwall Park was named in honour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V), and gifted in 1901 by Sir John Logan Campbell to the people of New Zealand. His vision was to provide a park for people to escape the "hustle and bustle" of Auckland city life.

Maungakiekie is named after the kiekie plant (Freycinetia banksii) and literally
means "mountain of the kiekie". Maungakiekie is Auckland's second largest volcano and one of
