Orere Point is a peaceful coastal village at the top of the Firth of Thames, popular for swimming, boating and fishing. There is a holiday park campground and a delightful B&B called Tui Cottage (www.tuicottage.com).
When I was a little girl (50's) my grandfather and grand mother would drive from Glendowie in their old crank start Dodge, to Bucklands Beach to visit an auntie. We would always stop at Pidgeon mountain for a picnic as it was rude to arrive as a guest, hungry. This was an all day excursion as it was all farmland and gravel roads.
Pigeon Mountain was once called Ohuiarani. It was originally three times its present size but its two craters had been quarried away to provide scoria. This area was occupied by the Ngai Tai people and the first Europeans to settle in this area were the fencibles from Howick. For more photos of Pigeon Mountain go to : Aotearoa Cam
