One of the first areas of Wellington to be settled, due to its benign microclimate and protection from Wellington's notorious winds. It was always a very mixed suburb - plenty of working men's cottages and plenty of magnificent Victorian & Edwardian villas. Now subject to extensive gentrification.

My grandfather, Walter Read built his house on Daniell St in 1929. His building application was addressed from Wingate Terrace. His deceased wife of the time, my maternal grandmother, had the maiden name Wingate. I should like to know more history of Wingate Tce, and the Tenths Trust in Daniell St around the Wingate Tce area.
My great-grandparents, the Wingates were actually farming in the Manawatu from 1877, so I am anxious to know more. June Allen

I have recently found out that my Great Grandmother lived on Daniell St in Newtown in her childhood. There were other family members who owned various houses in the street as well. My Great Grandmothers maiden name was Maud Eva McKinnis. I'm curious as to which house she lived in as I live on Daniell St as well (strange coincidence!). Anyone got any ideas how I could figure out which house was hers?

Has anyone heard of the Gill Anker Whittle Seahouse Newtown?
I am presuming it was a Hotel. My Grandparents were married there in 1904.

its flat hunting that brings about a funny story, We had 2 weeks to find a new place so I'd set up a profile on a flatshare website and got a reply from someone advertising a 15 bedroom mansion, with free internet and a proffesional cleaner! Wow, i thought? So my flatmate and i set out to have a look, on the way we joked how it could either be a real lush mansion full of babes with a pool, or some strange mass cult dwelling..but it was noooo joke....
The place was actually the 100 year old nurses dorm behind the hostpital in Newtown, a big grey building hidden away from the normal streets. We were greeted at the door by a huge man who resembled Frankenstien, his big ugly face lit up as he welcomed us into the house, as we were given a tour through the maze of dark corridors we were getting spooked..
Our guide began telling us the rules: no alcohol, no music in the bedrooms, no stereos allowed! "The routine here is up at 7am and curfew at 11pm and then SILENCE!" He glared down at us with crazy evil eyes! He said there were 15 other people living there, but there seemed to be noone else around, just us... i guessed they were chained up in the basement or something!
My friend and i were out of there as soon as we could undo the 20 locks on the door, seperating us from the haunted cult mansion and the reality of the outside world! We ran down the hill screaming, not quite beilieving it had been real, it was like something straight out of a B-Grade horror movie! We heard from someone later that after World War II there had been a tb epidemic and a fire in that house and nurses had died there, spoooky! Does anyone have any more detail on this place?
