TARARUA ACRE

131 people died the night the Tararua crashed onto the Otara Reef, which runs out to sea from Waipapa Point for 13 kilometers, for days afterwards bodies washed ashore. A peice of land at Otara was made into a cemetery for 55 of the dead. Of the 151 passengers and crew on board, only the twenty who made it ashore survived.
