Manawatu Racing Club was established in 1880 and now races 8 times a year at Awapuni which is also used by three other Clubs for their fixtures. The course is the busiest training and racing venue in the lower half of the North Island, regularly attracting big crowds for its feature racedays.

One of the most memorable racedays in the Club’s history took place in 1935 when the Duke of Gloucester attended the Club’s New Year meeting and rode T. A. Duncan's Black Man to come fourth in the Ladies Bracelet. The Club has conducted their racemeetings at Awapuni racecourse (Palmerston North) since 1980. The Club races 4 times a year with the big $75,000 Group 3 Merial Metric Mile in September, the $70,000 Listed Gallagher Group Marton Cup in January and the $60,000 Listed Savabeel Marton 1600 in May headlining their three Saturday feature meetings.

Horse racing has been part of Feilding’s history from its very earliest days. For over 100 years the Club raced on land that is now part of Manfield Park, Feilding. In 1999 the Club sold its course and now races at Awapuni Racecourse (Palmerston North) allowing it to significantly increase the prizemoney on offer at its fixtures. The Feilding Jockey Club races twice a year in November and May.

One of New Zealand’s oldest racing clubs, the Rangitikei Racing Club will be celebrating their 150th Anniversary in 2007. The Club established the Bulls racecourse around 1878 and raced there until 1969 when the Club shifted its activities to Awapuni Racecourse (Palmerston North). Today the Rangitikei Racing Club conducts 2 racemeetings each season at Awapuni, with the Rangitikei Gold Cup, which was first run in 1875, held at the Club’s February feature meeting.
