Christchurch has some great cafes and baristas. One of my favourite breakfast cafes is Coffee Smiths They have 2 inner city locations. One in Durham St and the other in Cashel St. Highly Recommended :)

I live in Chch. The population is closer to 400,000- the 2nd largest city in NZ- not 3rd. It is a beautiful city, with lots of greenery. It is flat- but so what? That's a positive- easy walking & you use less petrol!! I agree the people are conservative by comparison. Contrary to what someone else said, it is not grey. We get frosty nights in the winter, but generally sunny days as a result. Bad drivers, but then NZ in general have bad drivers. I love living here- it's big enough that it's vibrant & small enough that it's not congested & doesn't take you an hour to get anywhere.

Hey guys, I found a pretty good site for Christchurch accommodation and Christchurch hotels here if you're headed that way. For me, Akaroa Harbour's definitely a highlight of the area, just to swim with the dolphins. But that's just me, there's also the awesome scenery and for the wine buffs there's a good tipple if you head out to the Waipara area (but that might be a bit far for some). There's also quite a few "adventure activities" you can get up to.

I have recently moved down from the north island, a huge change here in chch, I have decided it is too flat, and yes I agree the weather may contribute to the moodiness, I do find that people arn't as friendly or helpful here??

Is 'The Wizard" still giving his speaches in the town Square? Thank you to Bleu and Paul for your hospitality: I'm the 'philanthropist'. The Gardens were beautiful. I have a job waiting for me in ChristChurch. I may go back.

I grew up in CHCH and I will never return to the often grey cloudy place, I'm sure the weather affects peoples moods and I was always moody, anywho there are beautiful things to see there, the mueseum is pretty awsome I'll never forget that, for some weird reason there are a LOT of good looking people in that city too so be careful if youre NOT single and youre visiting with your mates, take my advice and dont go out to the clubs, get an early night especially if youre looking to marry your sweetheart, CHCH has or had the biggest sex industry in NZ and I'm sure it has effected masses.

Definitely the worst drivers in the country, and far worse than Auckland. Other than than an easy town to relax in, perhaps too easy.

The City Centre is fine, but suburbia..did anybody ever shout halt to the madness of a non planning strategy, there are concrete block walls, brick walls, hedgerows, paling posts, wire fences, etc.etc. in front of the houses, there's no order or control to what you can have arounf your house. It looks crappish to say the least.

i live here, and i think that the pollution is true, but it is not just in winter here, its right through the year because of our strange weather patterns. Its a great city though - and its not all that flat well it might be to jaffas and stuff. byebye

Christchurch is a beautiful City with a population of approx 300.000. There is an excellent wine trail in the surrounding areas. You won't need a car in Christchurch. Hire a pushbike or a motor scooter. The place is as flat as a pancake.
