Achilles Point lies at the eastern end of Tamaki Drive and was named after the New Zealand crewed Achilles which, along with other allied vessels, tried to defeat the legendary German cruiser Graf Spee in 1939. This headland was previously known as Te Pane o Horoiwi, named after Horoiwi who arrived on the Tainui waka (canoe).
