Avondale College is unique in that it operates its own Outdoor Education Camp. The camp is situated in the Tongariro National Park on State Highway 47. Taurewa was a forestry camp and Avondale College took over the site in the early 1970's. It is now a thriving camp comprising of 16 huts, kitchen and a large lounge/dining area. The camp can cater for 50 persons. Each year Avondale College takes down 28 trips of 4th, 6th and 7th form (years 10, 12 and 13) students. It is the school policy that all students be able to attend Taurewa regardless of their financial situation. Teaching staff who go to camp with the students are trained in Outdoor Education. Three or four parents are required for each trip and their help is invaluable.
